Bio

Lovely Trees is the musical project of Toronto singer-songwriter and producer Sally McKay. Blending acoustic instrumentation with atmospheric electronics, her songs move through intimacy, longing, memory, and the shifting nature of human connection.

Before Lovely Trees, McKay recorded and performed in Toronto under the names Phauna and Lovage. Following the loss of her husband and longtime musical partner Mike Young in 2018, she began writing and self-producing a new body of work from her home studio, creating music that explored stillness, vulnerability, devotion, and transformation.

The debut album, Songs for the Visitor, introduced listeners to Lovely Trees’ immersive world of downtempo rhythms, cinematic textures, and emotionally direct songwriting. Much of the album was recorded in isolation during lockdown, with McKay performing and producing the work independently.

Now, Lovely Trees enters a new chapter with the upcoming album Devotion Scenes, arriving fall 2026. While still grounded in emotional honesty, the new material expands into more vivid and immediate territory — balancing electronic pulse, intimacy, and sweeping atmosphere.

The first single, Knees, is out May 29.

My new album, “Songs For The Visitor”, is a collection of ten deeply personal tracks, exploring themes of love, loss, and the continued presence of a passed love one.

These songs chronicle my journey through the grief of losing my husband and musical partner, Mike Young, who passed away in 2018 after a 10 year battle with Lewy Body’s Dementia. I recorded the album in my Toronto home studio, self-producing the tracks during a time of reflection and solitude. The process felt sacred, a space where I could honour my grief, connect with Mike’s memory, and explore the fragility of this time through sound. I poured my heart into every track, crafting each piece with reverence for the emotions it evoked.
