From the recording Songs For The Visitor
“Pick Up Mail”, the first song written for the album, "Songs For The Visitor", paints the early days of adjustment to the loss of my partner, as I continued to carry out the everyday chores and activities that would have marked a regular day. I was still picking up his mail from the mail box, expecting him to be there when I walked in the door, and I had the heavy task of parting with his belongings. But my longing actually kept him present to me, and in those tasks, I found comfort.
Lyrics
Pick Up Mail
I pick up all your mail
I'm laying out your clothes
Find I still worry 'bout your health
And I guess that's just how it goes
I talk and I talk, and you listen well
I share my day, and I could tell
You've got my back, you've got my back
I want you back, I want you back, I want you back
I'm lying on our bed
Scribbled notes of words we said
Found in drawers and pockets deep
My love is alive, my love is alive, my love is alive
I keep it here, I've got it right here
I talk and I talk, and you listen well
I share my day, and I could tell
You've got my back, you've got my back
I want you back, I want you back, I want you back,
I want you back, I want you back, I want you back
I pick up all your mail
I'm laying out your clothes
Find I still worry 'bout your health
And I guess that's just how it goes
